If something goes down your toilet, down your shower drain or through your laundry machine, then it’s going to be treated by your septic tank system. Most households have anywhere from a 500 to 1500 gallon septic tank system. Ideally, you want a 1500 gallon system because it affords you more time to properly process all of the waste and can actually decrease the number of pump outs your system will need. This is important because you want to remove the solids from the wastewater flow. This also allows for storage of solids, scum and septic tank sludge.

Septic Tank Treatment

The process above is really the most important part of a septic tank system. This process produces three products:

1) Scum – lighter than water and this usually winds up on top. Septic tank scum is made up of oil and grease.

2) Solids or Sludge – this is heavier and settles down to the bottom of the tank.

3) Clarified wastewater – this is the liquid that is in the middle…between the scum and the solids. This is ultimately released through the septic drainfield. Sometimes these are referred to as leachfields or disposal fields. This is actually the last step of the septic tank treatment process….disposal. You want this wastewater or “effluent” to flow through the drainfield and into the soil. Ultimately, this water is processed and taken up by your plants. Of course, this would be known by a septic tank contractor, but you would want your drainfield far away from streams or lakes and certainly drinking water

The drainfield is a section under the ground that has perforated pipe and is just below the grass line in a shallow trench. Drainfields that are well built and properly maintained will last for a long, long time. The key is septic tank maintenance. You must have a regularly scheduled professional come out for routine pump outs and maintain a healthy septic tank eco-system…with effective bacteria and a clog shocking treatment.

When functioning properly, household wastes are collected in your septic tank and then broken down, liquefied, and deodorized by the naturally occurring bacteria. Clean & Clear was designed for monthly, maintenance use, particularly to eliminate odors and unclog clogs before significant damage occurs. According to Clean & Clear system users, the eco-friendly, bio-pack has proven to be both effective and easy to use.

3 Fast Tips on Septic Tank Maintenance

1) Keep you septic tank on regular maintenance intervals by a reputable, local septic tank company (no matter where you live…Texas, Florida, California – it does not matter). If you try to get around this step you are begging for trouble.

It’s going to cost you anywhere from $150-250 for 2 years of maintenance. This is an inexpensive, septic tank maintenance measure that will pay for itself. Something like this could save you from EVER having trouble with your system. Just maintain your septic unit…just like you would your car. As they say, pay me now or pay me later.

2) Always be aware of what you are putting in your garbage disposal. You should be aware that what you put in your system, has a big impact on how it preforms. For example, you should never put coffee grounds down your garbage disposal if you have a septic tank system. Keep out feminine products out of the toilet. Keep strong chemicals out of any kind…I have another post on this site covering just this topic.

3) Maintain your septic tank and fight odors with a monthly maintenance product. A healthy and strong septic eco-system is key to preforming well and knocking out bad septic tank odors. Monthly treatments, like Clean & Clear Septic Tank Treatment, only cost pennies a day. However, make sure whatever you buy is guaranteed and preferably longer than 30 days. Plus, it should also be an unconditional guarantee.

So, start by maintaining your septic tank system with a good product and have a septic tank professional keep you on a regular maintenance plan.

7 Strategies to Maintaining a Healthy Septic Tank System

Keeping and maintaining a healthy septic tank systems is crucial to getting the expected life cycle from your system. The quickest way to have problems with your system comes from one word…neglect. Why would someone just leave their system to preform on its own without regular care? As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. The same is true, in a way, with your septic tank system. Keeping the digging contractors away and your lawn, driveway and sidewalk in one piece is our goal.

This starts with regular inspections. Check with you local septic tank company and ask them to put you on a regular schedule for maintenance and inspection. They might charge you a nominal fee for a 12 or 24 month contract. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $100-$150 should cover it.

So, what should they be doing?

How can you be sure your system is getting the care that it needs?

Below are 7 things they should be checking during their inspections. Remember, inspections are key to keeping and maintaining a healthy septic tank and septic tank system.

1) Aerator Filters
2) Tank Filter
3) Test & Reset Sprinkler Heads
4) Chlorine Tablets
5) Check Timer, Alarm and Photo Cell
6) Check Sludge Levels*
7) Check and Replace (if needed) Your Diffuser

* Sludge levels over 50% typically will require a pump out. Always ask them what percentage your sludge level was at after their inspection.

Hopefully, this information proves useful and helpful as you maintain a healthy septic tank system. Remember, septic tank maintenance is the key to a long system life. Invest in maintaining your system and consider an eco-friendly septic tank maintenance product.

How do should you maintain your septic system? Here are some quick tips and strategies for maintaining a healthy system.

1) Be careful where you park your car – that’s right! The quickest way to damage your septic tank is driving on the lawn over your system. The weight of your vehicle can cause damage. Damage that can’t be seen until it’s too late.

2) Maintain your lawn – keeping leaves and grass cut back from your system will keep them from getting in and clogging your lines. Also, if you have a warning light box, keep the leaves from getting in under the protective cover.

3) Keep the bugs away. Small insects and rodents can get into your system and cause problems. Ask an insect control company to advise you on how best to prevent this and where they should spray. Don’t do this yourself!

4) Maintain it like you maintain your car. Maintain a healthy ecosystem within your septic tank by using a monthly septic tank additive with at least 300 billion bacterial organisms.

5) Use a professional. Always have a professional septic tank company check your system and schedule routine pump outs.

4 Hidden Places to look for Septic Tank Odors

You may have experienced the embarrassing odors that sometimes come from septic tank systems. When considering where these pesky odors are emanating from, consider these 4 areas.

1) Joint leaks in piping.
2) Piping that has been punctured.
3) Drain traps leaking gas back into the building or house.
4) Septic system failure due to a failed septic drainfield.

Now there are other reasons you might have septic tank odors and really the only way to diagnose to real issue is to have a professional look at your system. This really goes back to the issue of having a professional service come out an inspect your system at least every 6 months.

Of course, you also want to have regular pump outs of your system.

****** Septic Tank Odors? – 6 Month Money Back Guarantee with Clean & Clear Septic Treatment******

Having your water treated by the city or town you live in is so easy you just use the water and there is nothing else to worry about. Having a septic tank you have more issues to consider. One of the biggest issues is if you have the right balance of septic tank bacteria and enzymes, and if you need more or less in your tank, and how you can maintain this balance.

There are several ways you can keep the balance in your tank and believe it or not they are all pretty easy. You have to keep a simple record of how often you’ve treated your system. Writing down when the last time your tank was cleaned, inspected, and treated will help you should any thing go wrong. You should have your septic system inspected once a year to make sure everything is in working order.

It should be pumped out every 3-5 years or what your owner’s manual says. Everything I’ve read says that you should treat your system once a month. There are many products on the market so it would be up to you which one you would want to use.

Having the right ecosystem in your tank will save you a lot of money. If you don’t have enough bacteria and enzymes in your tank it can back up and cause you many problems including backing up into your house, no one wants sewage in their tubs, sink and on their floors.

Having too little bacteria and enzymes can also cause harmful chemicals to leach into the soil; this can contaminate the water table. Using water unwisely can also throw off the balance of your ecosystem, to prevent this you should install low flow shower heads and toilets and conserve water other ways you can think of. Having the right treatment in your tank will make it less likely that your system will fail.

If you are wondering how your septic system works well it’s pretty easy your septic system has two parts the tank and the leach field. When you flush waste it goes into your tank where the solids sink to the bottom the oils stay on the top the bacteria then eats and digests this waste and then it is flushed into the leach field and treated again after this it is leached out as safe water and is absorbed into the soil.

It is very important that you use the best septic tank treatment for your septic tank system you can find; you may think that it is an unnecessary expense but it’s not you need to know that if your ecosystem in your tank is not in balance then your whole system can go down. This will cost you more money then the treatment would have. Prevention is the key to keeping your system healthy and in good working order.

A twenty four month supply of a septic tank treatment can be found here:

Having a septic tank is like having any other major appliance, you must maintain it. A good way to make sure you avoid septic tank problems and keep your system in working order is to think of it as a pet that you have to feed. A healthy pet is a happy pet. If you put the wrong items in your septic tank, you will have a huge bill to fix it. Most figures put Septic Tank “dig outs” over $6,000

Some unusual items have clogged up peoples septic tanks. Some of the biggest culprits are garbage disposals. Most disposals do not chop the peelings of the fruits and vegetables small enough not to clog the tank. If your disposal does not chop up the food small enough then the food can double in size, clog your tank, and cause you to have to get it pumped out or fixed.

Feminine hygiene products which includes pads and tampons, although some say that they can be flushed you should never flush them because they are made to absorb liquid and will double in size, diapers will do the same, this is because of the absorbent beads in them.

Coffee grounds and cat litter also absorb moisture and will expand and cause blockage in your septic tank. Some condoms and dental floss are made from man made products and are not biodegradable.

Children love to put toys and anything else in the toilet that they can find, this can be a huge problem with septic tanks. Toys and other objects clog regular toilet systems to clog but it can be worse if it is your septic system. If your system is clogged or it backs up it is going to be very costly.

Once it backs up you will smell it before you see it. If it backs up into your yard, it can also back up into the ground water and you will have a bigger problem. Gasoline, oil, and pesticides would really be a hazard if they leaked out and got into the soil or ground water because this would make people sick.

You need to make sure that your young children are aware that the toilet is not a place to play; If you need to you can do what I did after my daughter tried to flush a Barbie doll down the toilet, we put a lock on the door high enough so she could not reach it, and this would only be temporary until they are out of that stage.

If you do need to do repairs because of a problem make sure you know where your tank is this will save you on labor costs when the repair people come, my cousin marked hers with a small removable bird bath. The people she bought the house from told her it was 45 feet from her back door and they where wrong, it was put further back then they thought.

Below are some quick septic tank maintenance tips.

What to do?

Divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways and other areas away from your drainfield. Have your septic tank pumped regularly. It should also be inspected for leaks, cracks and to make sure the exit baffle is in place.

Plus,
* Install lint and effluent filters.
* Spread out your laundry loads.
* Compost your garbage or put it in the trash

What not to do?

Do not use a garbage disposal. These appliances normally double the amount of solids added to the tank! Do not flush sanitary napkins, disposable diapers or other non-biodegradable products into your system. Do not dump solvents, oils, paint thinners, disinfectants, pesticides or poisons down the drain as they can disrupt the treatment process and contaminate the groundwater. Do not dig in your drainfield or build anything over it. Drive over your drainfield or compact the soil in any way. Plant trees close to the septic system, because the roots can get in the lines and plug them. Grass is the only thing that should be planted on or near a drainfield.

Did you know that more than 1200 people in the US die each year from contaminated water, and failing septic systems are a leading source of waterborne disease outbreaks in the country today? In a 2000 EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) report, 31 states listed septic systems as their second greatest potential source of groundwater contamination.

The EPA guidelines

Fortunately, the EPA has established management guidelines for the proper installation and management of septic tanks to help insure the long term sustainability of the septic system and to protect the quality and healthfulness of the community water supply.

The following general but simple guidelines and steps can definitely help you to keep your septic tank clear, clean and odor free for a long time.

1. Avoid Excessive Water Use

You can also damage your septic system by doing a large number of laundry loads in a short period of time. In standard septic systems, solid materials settle in the tank, while effluent flows out into the ground. If you put more water into the system than it is built to handle, the high volume of water will flood your system, and can also stir up and flush solids out of the tank into the drain field .The solution is to spread out your water use. Do one or two loads of laundry per day, rather than 10-12 loads on Saturday morning. Water softeners can also damage your system by putting too much water through the septic system.

You can also upgrade your softener with a newer efficient model that uses less water and regenerates on demand, instead of a timer system that regenerates whether you use water or not. Alternatively, install a mini septic system for your water softener.

3. Use of Household Cleaning Products

Excessive use of these products can contribute to septic system failure. If you do over 5 loads per week containing bleach, problems could arise. Avoid powdered detergents as they contain plastic fillers that can plug up your lines and drain field. Also, be careful with harsh automatic toilet bowl cleaners, which have put quite a few systems out of commission.

4. Use a washing machine filter

Did you know that washing machines are a leading cause of septic system failure? The primary culprit is lint generated by washing machines, which clogs the soil in drain fields. Fortunately, this lint can be prevented from entering the septic system through the use of a reusable, inline filter which attaches to your washing machine discharge hose.

5. Prevent Solids from Leaving the Tank

First of all, you should get your septic tank pumped on a regular basis to prevent excessive accumulation of solids in the tank. Under normal conditions, you should have the tank inspected and pumped every 1-3 years. Tanks should be pumped and inspected through the manhole cover, not the inspection pipe. Your septic contractor should also install an effluent filter in the exit baffle of the tank. Effluent filters stop the larger solids from getting out to the drain field. They are cleaned out every few years when you have your septic tank pumped. Effluent filters are cheap insurance and along with a washing machine filter, one of the best things you can do to protect your system. Also, consider using a septic tank treatment product to maintain your system.
